Moray House Tests

University of Edinburgh

Moray House Tests have been used for many years as part of the procedure for entry to selective secondary education, and have a high reputation for their accuracy and consistency. These verbal reasoning tests also provide a useful complement to assessments based solely on attainments, and may be used to establish a 'baseline' against which to evaluate subsequent performance.

The tests are highly reliable, standardised, and are all calibrated on to the same scale, to allow comparability. Age allowances are provided, to take account of the different ages at which pupils may take the test. Scoring is completely objective.

An ideal method for comparing pupils on intake with their subsequent performance, the tests can also provide a fair indicator of the 'added value' the school is providing to its pupils. Schools which use the Scorer/Profiler CD-ROMs (see below) can also identify pupils whose progress seems out of line with their potential.

Moray House Tests provide the quickest and most convenient single indicator of future school attainment. Schools can determine the level of ability they require and apply similar standards to successive intakes over a period of years.

The choice of equivalent tests is particularly useful in ensuring that a different suite of tests is available for use each year.

Note that practice questions, where applicable, are included in the test booklet itself: no separate practice paper is required.

Scorer/Profiler CD-ROMs for Moray House Tests 86-91
These user-friendly Scorer/Profiler CD-ROMs are purpose-designed for schools using Moray House Tests 86-91 as part of the pupil admissions procedure at age 11. For each test, the CD-ROM calculates pupil ages and converts MHT raw scores to standardised scores at the touch of a button - accurately and instantly. It also enables you to monitor subsequent pupil progress and identify underachievement during the year of entry.

The MHT Scorer/Profiler allows you to import pupil details direct from any spreadsheet, and fully automates all the data processing, giving instant access to test performance statistics and analyses in the format you require: view (and print) pupil lists in merit order, alphabetically, by gender, age and/or by feeder school. You can also include any other test scores obtained as part of the admissions procedure.

It then allows you to track pupils throughout the first year, using OFSTED-type regression analysis to identify pupils who are making better, or worse, progress than might be predicted from the entry assessment(s). The MHT Scorer/Profiler runs on virtually any PC and is free-standing: it sets no limit to the number of pupil records, and there is no annual licence fee. A comprehensive User's Manual is included as a pdf file on the CD-ROM.
